The Procedure
A tracheal shave procedure is performed under general anesthesia at our fully accredited private surgical suite in Manhattan, NYC. The plastic surgeon makes a careful incision under the chin / jaw or a skin crease (to ensure minimal visibility). The thyroid cartilage and vocal cords are located through the insertion of a small camera in the incision area. Your board certified plastic surgeon shaves down the excess thyroid cartilage, completely avoiding the vocal cords. Many patients undergo other gender affirming procedures in conjunction with a tracheal shave, such as cheek augmentation, facial contouring, or rhinoplasty.
Recovery
Patients are typically recommended to take 1-2 days for recovery with minimal physical / vocal activity – including singing or speaking loudly. We encourage all patients to take several days to rest their voices and fully recover. Mild discomfort (sore throat, bruising, swelling) is normal during the recovery period.
